Lasers, Lab Coats & Long Bets

LFG Ventures presents a weekly newsletter delivering private market (pre-IPO) insights and signals across tech and frontier industries.

GM,

From orbital lasers to biotech labs, the edges of tech are starting to blur. Claude’s stepping into life sciences, OpenAI is rewriting the browser, and Groq’s silicon is outpacing GPUs to accelerate enterprise AI. Starlink is morphing into orbital infrastructure. Kalshi is riding momentum toward a $10B prediction market. And, our favorite defense tech company Anduril is extending its reach with stealthy infrared hardware.

Here’s what we’re tracking this week.

🧬 Claude Gets a Lab Coat

Anthropic just launched Claude for Life Sciences, a tailored version of its model for researchers, pharma teams, and biotech firms. It’s designed to read complex papers, generate hypotheses, and visualize data for drug discovery. Partners already include 10x Genomics, Deloitte, and AWS. This move pushes Claude beyond chat and into specialized AI for trillion-dollar industries where accuracy actually matters. Anthropic

💻 OpenAI Builds Its Own Browser

OpenAI unveiled ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser for macOS that blends ChatGPT directly into your web experience. It can summarize pages, edit text, and even take actions on your behalf through “Agent Mode.” The catch is privacy. Atlas collects browsing history and memory to improve personalization, raising familiar questions about where the line between convenience and surveillance sits. We are going to check it out and report back. Video below on how this comes to life. OpenAI

😎 Anduril Expands into Infrared

Anduril Industries acquired American Infrared Solutions, a U.S. maker of cooled infrared cameras. The move gives Anduril tighter control over critical sensor hardware and expands its reach into the electromagnetic spectrum, strengthening its position across defense and space applications. Anduril

🔌 IBM Levels Up with Groq

IBM is partnering with Groq to bring its lightning-fast inference hardware into WatsonX, promising major speed gains for enterprise AI workloads. Groq claims its chips run inference up to five times faster than traditional GPUs, a clear sign that the real AI race is now being fought at the silicon layer. YahooFinance

🛰️ Starlink Becomes a Platform

SpaceX is opening its Starlink laser communication tech to third-party companies, letting other satellites connect through its high-speed inter-satellite links. The move shifts Starlink from a closed network to an open platform, expanding its business model and accelerating global reach. It also positions SpaceX as a key provider of orbital data infrastructure, turning Starlink’s laser system into the backbone for inter-satellite communication across constellations. PC Mag

📈 Kalshi Eyes $10B Valuation

Prediction market platform Kalshi is reportedly fielding investor offers that would value the company at over $10 billion, just months after raising $300 million at half that. The surge comes as regulatory clarity from the CFTC and growing trading volume push the company into the mainstream. Kalshi’s model, which lets users trade on real-world outcomes like elections and economic data, is gaining traction fast, but the line between regulated markets and gambling still keeps regulators close. ♟ The Long Game According to Josh Kushner

Good piece in Collosus this week on Josh Kusher from Thrive Capital, known for early investments in OpenAI, Databricks, Anduril, Spotify and many, many others. Josh has built Thrive Capital by betting on ideas that compound quietly, not trends that fade loudly. His approach blends patience with conviction, and it keeps winning. This profile breaks down what long-term thinking actually looks like in practice in an arena filled with giants.

The State of Crypto 2025

a16z’s new State of Crypto report paints a clear picture. The hype cycle has cooled, but the infrastructure layer is quietly winning. Stablecoins, wallets, and onchain rails are driving real adoption and transaction volume. The noise is fading, and what’s left is the foundation for the next decade of financial plumbing.
